Q. How often should I see a dentist?
A. Dr. Tickner and his Tooth team are in agreement with The American Dental Association (ADA) guidelines which recommend visiting a dentist at least twice a year for a check-up and professional cleaning.
The reason Dr. Tickner likes to see you on a regular basis is that he and his Tooth Team can check for problems that you may not see or feel. Frequently problems don't become visible or cause you pain until they are in more advanced stages.
This could include:
Early detection often means less work, less complication and less pain.
If you fall into a group that would be considered a high risk of dental disease, it is very likely that Dr. Tickner may ask you to visit more frequently. This high-risk group includes:
People with current gum disease
People with a weak immune response to bacterial infection
People who tend to get cavities or build up plaque
Conversely, if you take good care of your teeth and gums at home and Dr. Tickner doesn't find any cavities or gum disease for a few years, he may suggest that the time between visits be lengthened.

Q. Can the dentist whiten my teeth?
A. Yes, we certainly can whiten teeth, cosmetic dentistry is one of Dr. Tickner’s specialities. There are several options for teeth whitening inlcuding:
In-Office - One session of in-office bleaching generally lasts one and a half to two hours. We will supply you with an armload of magazines, or bring a book or music on your tablet or phone, you can read or relax during the treatment.
Overnight Bleaching - This process reuqires a few hours of your time daily for about two weeks. Dr. Tickner and his team will make an impression of your teeth and create a mouthguard that fits your bite. Each evening or for a few hours during the day, wear the mouthguard for a gentle transition to whiter teeth.
Daily Bleaching - Other over-the-counter daily bleaching products are available and often yield results which will please you. It is important to use any bleaching product only under the supervision of a dentist, this is especially true for patients in their teens and 20’s. Over Bleaching can cause long term issues which can easily be avoided with proper supervision.
Q. What if I have a gap in my teeth, a chipped tooth or teeth that do not respond to normal bleaching methods?
A. Dr. Tickner and his Tooth Team have a variety of procedures that can help with challenging bleaching situations or other cosmetic dentistry issues. It is always the goal that any cosmetic dentistry is done that will most closely resemble your natural teeth. Both porcelain veneers and bonding are color-matched to the rest of your teeth and both are options for closing gaps
